The year is 1916. Europe is embroiled in a horrific war with no end in sight, and the United States remains hesitant to send troops into the conflict. Yet within the clandestine world of espionage, the U.S. is closely monitoring the operations of German agents throughout the world. Enter Dr. Francis Nash, a professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh—and an undercover agent for the Office of Naval Intelligence. Nash is assigned to courier sensitive photographs to an agent of the British Secret Intelligence Service in Europe. A chance meeting with the beautiful and mysterious Peggy Harrelson immerses Nash in murder and a deadly cat-and-mouse chase throughout war-torn Europe, pursued by German agents, czarist secret police, and Russian Bolsheviks. The prize is an arcane letter dating back to Catherine the Great that may alter the course of the war.
Just who is Peggy Harrelson, and what is she hiding? How can Nash trust and work with Reilly, his British counterpart who seems to play both friend and foe? Of what significance does an 18th century letter have for the British, Germans, and Russians?

The Great War is over—but the world is far from peaceful.
New tensions have ignited around the globe, and the struggle for power has shifted eastward—to a turbulent China caught between warlords, foreign powers, and revolutionary forces.
Dr. Francis Nash, a history professor at the University of Pittsburgh, continues to lead a double life. Behind the lecture hall stands a man working quietly for the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence. Since his last mission in wartime Europe, Nash has dreamed of leaving the shadow world behind, especially now that his relationship with Peggy Harrelson, a sharp-witted Baltimore newspaper reporter and fellow spy, has deepened into something unexpected.
Marriage. A quiet life in America. Freedom from espionage.
But history has other plans.
When secret American military codes are stolen by Japanese agents, Nash is sent across the Pacific to recover them before they fall into dangerous hands. At the same time, Peggy accepts an assignment of her own: to establish contact with a powerful Chinese warlord seeking U.S. military support in the chaotic struggle for control of China.
Their separate missions soon converge in a country teetering on the edge of transformation. In a land where foreign intrigue, colonial ambitions, and the violence of the Warlord Era collide, Nash and Harrelson must navigate a labyrinth of danger. Japanese intelligence operatives, ruthless Chinese warlords, and shadowy Russian Bolsheviks all move their pieces across the board. Trust is scarce, betrayal is common, and survival requires every skill they possess.
Amid gunfire, espionage, and political upheaval, the two agents face their greatest challenge yet: deciding whether their growing love can survive a life lived in the shadows.
This sweeping historical espionage thriller set in 1920s China blends international intrigue, mystery, and romance against the dramatic backdrop of the Chinese Warlord Era and the fading age of colonial power.
Perfect for readers who enjoy historical spy thrillers, international mysteries, and character-driven adventures, this second installment in the Nash & Harrelson Historical Mystery series delivers danger, history, and passion in equal measures.
